A recent post on Reddit’s conspiracy subreddit (their nomenclature, not mine) attempted to breathe new life into the very old, very stupid claim that all of the cars parked in the Sandy Hook School’s lot that morning were facing the same direction, which I guess is supposed to be evidence of staging rather than convenience. Confident that I had tackled this low-hanging fruit some time ago, I searched through my own posts and – much to surprise – found that I had only made very brief mention of it in Fact Checking “Nobody Died At Sandy Hook”, Chapter One. Huh. Then I realized that this was due to the fact that the claim only appears once in Fetzer’s masterwork, in the Prologue, which I never bothered to cover due to my belief that any claims made in the prologue would surely be revisited later in the book. In my defense, I was just starting this wonderful journey and I hadn’t yet realized that, despite his many, many attempts, James Fetzer simply does not know how to write a book. My bad.

So, like one of those terrible dreams where you’re forced to go back to high school as an adult because you just realized you failed a class and never graduated, I must now relive one of the most painful experiences of my life: reading “Nobody Died At Sandy Hook: It Was a FEMA Drill To Promote Gun Control”, by James Fetzer.

From page twelve of the prologue, written by ol’ Jimmy himself:

More parking lot anomalies – and a stunner!

Inspection of the vehicles in the parking lot in front of the school shows that they are parked in the wrong direction (which should have been nosein), given the arrangement for driving into the lot. The image itself suggests of a group of drivers methodically filling up the lot with used or abandoned cars, driving straight into the designated parking places without regard for how they should have been arranged. Once again we ask, “What is the probability that the lot would be filled with cars parked in the wrong direction, if this had been a real event? What if this had been a drill?”

In all fairness, while the claim on Reddit is that all of the cars are facing in the same direction, the book does not use that exact language (though it could be argued that is the implication). “All” is very specific verbiage, and right off the bat – simply by looking at one of the many pictures of the parking lot taken that day – we know that this is not the case. Here is a an aerial photo of the parking lot from early that morning that I’ve featured a number of times on this site:

Notice that two of the four cars (not including the police cruisers) in the front row, closest to the school, are facing away from the building. So we’ve already proven that no, not all of the cars in the lot were facing the same direction. And then there’s the middle row, which is where the majority of the cars in the lot are parked. While it may be tough to make out here, there’s a dark grey Mazda sedan almost directly in front of the school’s entrance that is also facing away from the school. Again, when you’re making the claim that all of the cars are parked in the same direction, most will not do. It’s a bit like claiming everything Wolfgang Halbig says is total bullshit when we know that only most of it is.

But what is the probability that these cars would be parked like this? Very high, actually! And I know this because – unlike Fetzer – I’ve actually looked into a bit. Using Google Earth, I was able to pull up a clear image of the school’s lot from August of 2010, taken while it was relatively full:

Oh, snap! Not only do we clearly have different cars, parked in different spots, but it appears as if nearly every single one of them is facing the school. But maybe this is an an anomaly. Maybe there was another “FEMA/Capstone mass shooter drill” that day! Is there any more proof that they’ve been parking this way for years? Sure is! Here’s another Google Earth photo, this time from March of 2012:

Once again the cars and their configuration in the lot are different (just in case anyone wants to make the absurd claim that actually, the cars were staged years ago), yet almost all of them are (still) parked facing the same direction.

Even beyond Google Earth, we can find a number of photographs taken in and around the school that show the cars parked in the exact same manner, such as this one, taken on August 25th, 2010, and published in the Newtown Bee:

As well as this one, also published in the Newtown Bee, and taken on December 17th, 2011:

So as far as all available evidence is concerned, Sandy Hook faculty and staff have always parked this way. But why? Well, why not? If the scene had been staged (and it hadn’t), then the process would likely be identical to one employed by actual staff: enter the lot one car at a time and then pull directly into a spot, parking in the most convenient way possible. This means pulling through spots for those who arrive early enough, so that they don’t have to back up in order to leave at the end of the day. James Fetzer insists that this is “wrong”, but why? According to who? The arrows in the lot are obviously there to direct the flow of traffic as it relates to picking up and dropping off students. Even if they didn’t, cars wouldn’t have to go the “wrong” way in order to park like this.

I can also add that getting out of a school parking lot in the afternoon can be a nightmare so staff get very good at parking in a way to make egress easier. In this case the pull through helps that. Hell I look for the opportunity to pull through anywhere I can when I am out and about let alone work. Just easier to get out of a spot that way.

I’m the same way in that, if I’m going to the mall or something similar, I’ll take a spot further from the door if it means I can pull through. I would imagine that this kind of stuff is obvious to most people, but of course deniers are not most people…. a fact I’m very grateful for.
