James Fetzer frequently brags about the quantity as well as alleged quality of his book’s contributors, usually as a way of deflecting attention away from the actual quality of his research (or lack thereof). After all, a book written by multiple doctors couldn’t possibly be wrong, could it?

One of the book’s more flagrant chapters – Chapter Two – is written by someone calling themselves “Dr. Eowyn”, who goes to great lengths to remain anonymous not only throughout this book, but on their own crank website, “Fellowship of the Minds”. But I wanted to know a bit more about the kind of person who could shit out something so vile and have the audacity to commit it to print. Were they actually a professor and professional author, as they so proudly claimed? Without a name, we have only their word, and can we really trust the word of someone capable of making so many elementary mistakes? So I did some digging and it wasn’t long before I found the information I was looking for.

The e-mail address currently listed for “Dr. Eowyn” on “Fellowship of the Minds” didn’t lead to much as it was likely set up specifically for the site. So I used the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine to pull up the oldest available snapshot of the site from January, 2010 and found a different address:

Much like “Fellowship of the Minds” appears to be a “Lord of the Rings” reference, “Rivendell” is an “Elven outpost” in Middle Earth. These Tolkien references play an important role in establishing the identity of “Dr. Eowyn” (yet another LOTR reference), so bear with me.

Searching on the “eorivendell” e-mail address was a bit more fruitful. Within those results was an e-mail chain, saved as a PDF, regarding a garage in Berkeley, CA:

While some of the e-mail addresses were not directly linked to names, I was still able to determine that the “eorivendell” address belonged to Maria Chang. Although it’s publicly available information, I’ve censored her address, as listed in the document. Now armed with a name, I was able to locate her Blogger profile:

Maria’s Blogger profile is very revealing as we see more of her LOTR obsession on display as well as some personal information, including her background as a professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. This is confirmed on the University of Nevada, Reno’s website:

This certainly lines up with the claims of “Dr. Eowyn”. Also in Maria’s profile, listed under “My blogs”, we find “Fundamental Option”, which not only shares the same look and tone as “Fellowship of the Minds”, but also links directly to “Fellowship” in Maria’s final entry, dated February 1st, 2010:

While Maria claims to only “frequent” the site, that’s likely just a way of separating herself from the “Dr. Eowyn” persona as her views get more and more outrageous.

There were a few more ways in which I was able to link Maria Chang to “Dr. Eowyn”, but I believe the evidence presented above is as direct as necessary and does not require any further explanation.

Just for fun, here are some of Maria’s more… interesting reviews from RateMyProfessors.com:

What about her career as an author? Amazon lists her as the author of four books, all of which are about Chinese politics:

“Falun Gong: The End of Days”
“Return of the Dragon: China’s Wounded Nationalism”
“The Labors of Sisyphus” (available for only $0.01! What a bargain!)
“The Chinese Blue Shirt Society” (available for only $95.00! What a bargain!)

Here’s a very telling customer review of “Falun Gong: The End of Days”:

If you’d like to hear and see Chang’s twitchy ramblings in the flesh, there is video of her (about 13-14 minutes worth) speaking in front of the International Security Council at the Supreme Court building in early June of 1990, and it is currently still available on C-SPAN’s website. The video is unable to be embedded, but you can view it by clicking on the following (horrifying) still:

What’s up with those eyebrows? Thank you to Arie Fique for the find.

Maria Chang, Professor, joined the department in Fall 1989 from the University of Puget Sound. A native of Hong Kong, she received all her degrees (Ph.D., M.A., B.A.) in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.

She is the author of four books: Falun Gong: The End of Days (Yale University Press, 2004), which was translated into French and Korean; Return of the Dragon: China’s Wounded Nationalism (Boulder, CO: Westview, 2001); The Labors of Sisyphus: The Economic Development of Communist China (News Brunswick, NJ: Transaction, 1998); and The Chinese Blue Shirt Society: Fascism and Developmental Nationalism (U. C. Berkeley: Institute of East Asian Studies, 1985). She also co-authored six other books, and is the author of 29 articles in such journals as East Asia, Journal of Strategic Studies, Comparative Strategy, and Asian Survey.

Chang is the recipient of several awards, including UNR’s Mousel-Feltner Research Award (1998), Chiang Ching-kuo International Individual Research Fellowship (1995), and a National Fellowship at the Hoover Institution at Stanford (1984). She is a three-time finalist for UNR’s Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award (2003, 2001, 1999), as well as a finalist for the White House Fellowship (1985). She is also listed in some 26 Who’s Who publications, including Contemporary Authors, International Authors and Writers Who’s Who, AcademicKeys Who’s Who in Social Sciences Higher Education, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and religionsource.org (the American Academy of Religion’s online database of scholars with expertise related to religion or ethics).

Chang also is a lecturer for the U. S. Department of Defense’s Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy, as well as the U. S. Marine Corps War College. Her teaching responsibilities in the department include courses on comparative politics (China, Japan, nationalism) and political theory (political ethics, philosophy of science). N.B.: It seems quite likely that Thomas Potter is a pseudonym used by Maria Hsia Chang. His post has been spammed across YouTube, Reddit, and others using two names with the same profile picture: Emmanual Goldstein (after 1984) and Thomas Potter. Given the information in this article about Chang’s using references to her favorite fantasy books, I suggest she’s doing the same thing here – Thomas Potter is an amalgamation of Tom Riddle and Harry Potter, obviously from the Harry Potter series. While somewhat speculative, this reeks of her M.O.

After a short period of digging, which included a call to the University of Nevada, Reno, I have found some inconsistencies in her CV. She did not receive the 1998 Mousel Feltner Award, for example. Bruno Bauer received that honor. I could find no evidence of a Hoover Institution fellowship either.

Great job digging into the CV. I thought the inclusion of the “Who’s Who” was pretty funny. Don’t people pay to be listed in those things? Aren’t they just a big scam?

Thank you. I feel like I wasted an hour of my life, but it’s a good exercise. To be honest, I’m not sure how I came across her.

As to your question, YES! They’re called “vanity publications” and are frowned upon in the academic community. That was the red flag that got me started on the dig. I suspect a lot of the information is padded.

In other posts, she brags about the DoD (and such) first and foremost. It could be made up, but putting that out there so braggadocio is laughable. To do that one simply has to select a topic of interest on which to lecture that is of interest and relevance to the department. So long as the proposal looks good and you’re capable of academic work, you’re in. It’s not exactly that simple and takes time and having your shit together, but it’s not that big of a deal. “Lecturer” is not faculty or professor. She probably gave one or two lectures (if any) and put it on her CV.

Also, when people receive a reward, such as the Mousel Feltner Award, there is ALWAYS a project associated with it in a CV. They don’t just give you a reward, you have to have made progress on a specific research project and no one who received an award would be dumb enough not to put WHAT they received the reward for in their CV or bio.

Also, you should screen shot her response. I called her out on several YouTube posts so it may disappear.

You’ve piqued my interest, so I actually fired off a couple of e-mails to Chiang Ching-kuo International as well as the Hoover Institution at Stanford. Someone from the Hoover Institution already wrote back and said they were forwarding my question over to the Hoover archives, so hopefully I’ll hear back shortly. I don’t have a lot of faith that I’ll hear back from Chiang Ching-kuo, which is located in Taiwan.

It’s only fair that I report one of her claims checks out. According to the very nice folks over at the Hoover Institution, Maria Hsia Chang did receive one of twelve a “National and Peace” fellowships back in the summer of 1984. They even sent me a picture from the campus report to prove it:

          https://www.crisisactorsguild.com/img/maria_chang_hoover_01.jpg

Looking at the vile and hateful material available on her site these days, it’s kind of mind-blowing to think she received a “Peace” fellowship, even if it was thirty-two years ago.

I just heard back from the CCK Foundation and it looks like the recipients of their fellowships have been listed on their website all along. Listed under their American recipients for 1994-1995 (http://www.cckf.org.tw/recipientsA1994.htm) is:

Chang’s early academic work was on Asian fascism. She is/was a grad student, then wife and co-thinker of A. James Gregor of UC Berkeley, a well-known writer on fascism. He was distinguished, among other things, by his own personal engagement on the postwar radical right, closeness to rightwing Asian authoritarian regimes, etc. Spooky couple (in more senses than one), and now, evidently, at least one of them has gone utterly over the bend.

OK. So she lives on Parnassus Ave, Berkleley, Ca (Hush, hush, 85, near the Lawrence Hall of Science). And her ex is Prof Gregor of Cal Berkeley.

Has anybody investigated her claim to have three degrees from Cal?

If so, has anybody asked the obvious question: How did this immoral idiot ever even achieve acceptance into the Cal system, let alone Berkeley?

  9. I just spent the last three days commenting on FotM’s website.
LoL. It took me three days to get kicked off of that site.
Normally, I don’t go onto a site with the intention to get kicked off of it.
But, for some reason, Dr. Eowyn took an instant dislike to what I had to say.
I started pointing out the fact that it wouldn’t have mattered who was elected president of the US, the status quo continues.
Then she starts pouring on the Hoolywood crapola stories.
To which, I pointed out these are crapola stories.
    I still don’t know who Rose McGowen is…..and I still don’t care.
But the kicker that got me kicked out was the joke I said about Kimmy from North Korea dropping a bomb on Hollywood.
Sure, it was a dumb joke. And I know Kimmy doesn’t really have any nukes…and it was made plain in the joke that kimmy doesn’t really have any nukes.
But you shoulda seen Dr. Eowyn blow a fucking gasket.
    She called me irrational.
But when I responded by asking her who is irrational? Me for not believing known liars or her for believing them, she responded by deleting my comment and banning me from her site.
Kinda hard to have a fellowship of the minds when there is only one mind in charge. Not exactly what I would call a fellowship.
    Anywho, that was my experience.
Maybe somebody else will have better luck telling the truth. She doesn’t seem all that interested in it.

I know I like to joke about the intelligence of Sandy Hook deniers quite a bit but it appears as if we have our very first comment from an actual Neanderthal.

I appreciate that y’all comment in all caps. It’s very on-brand.

      STALKER MENTALITY

Maria Hsia Chang has personally promoted the absurd Super Bowl choir claim, which has resulted in the relentless, actual stalking of at least one pre-teen girl. So if you think you’re going to make me feel at all bad about using publicly-available information to blow her cover, you’re wasting your time.

      • mestoop122 on August 10, 2018 at 6:53 am said:

If you have actual proof that Maria Hsia Chang’s claims have resulted in actual stalkings you should get a court order.

Using publicly-available information to do so should be quite easy.

Aren’t you concerned about people being stalked because of her actions?

Do you get a nickel every time you type “publicly-available information” or something? What gives?

Again, how or why would I obtain a court order on someone else’s behalf? I don’t personally know these people.

If you’re simply trying to cast doubt on the idea that the kind of nonsense vomited out by Maria Chang and her partners in crime has led to real-life harassment, then I’d suggest you look into Lucy Richards, Jonathan Reich, Matthew Mills, etc. Look into the fact that the Pozners have had to move seven times to escape harassment. There’s plenty of “publicly-available” information available on all of them.

You’d have to be from another planet to think “liberals” are the only ones looking to “stifle” filth peddlers like Maria Chang and Alex Jones. Though, to be fair, I can see where you may get that impression, as notorious liberal (and YUGE fan of Xi Jinping) Donald Trump continues his war on the free press and has even recently discussed regulating search engines because he Googled himself and his feelings got hurt.
